Municipal Archives of Sóller
Culture, Heritage and Festivals

Presentation

The Sóller Town Hall owns and manages the Sóller Municipal Archives. The aim of the Archives is to protect, preserve, organize and present the documents published by the Town Hall and those coming from private donations.

History

The first evidence of the existence of the archives dates from 1468. A notarial document mentions the existence of 275 volumes of documents. The next document mentioning the archives dates from the 19th century.
Several listing and cataloguing processes were carried out in the 19th century and the tasks continued throughout the 20th century. Despite the efforts, many documents were lost due to lack of control, change of location and above all poor preservation conditions (leaks, insects, lack of adequate shelves, staff shortage, etc).
At the end of 1983 the Town Hall arranged and went through the Archives. The tasks were completed under the guidelines set forth by Mr Antoni Mut Calafell, who was then director of the Archives of the Kingdom of Mallorca. The organizing and cataloguing processes lasted approximately two years and included the historical section, which is comprised of documents from the 14th to the 20th century.
In addition to the documents produced by the Town Hall, the Archives have received several private donations from individuals and companies deemed worthy of preservation (archives from the old textile factories or collections from the Marqués printer’s workshop).
A position of archivist was created in 2009 to set the service in motion and establish an efficient documentary management both for the Town Hall and the citizens.
