Sóller description
In the northwest of the island of Mallorca, in full heart of the Tramuntana Mountain Range, the city of Sóller emerges inserted into a luxuriant valley surrounded with olive groves and orange trees . Its privileged situation towards direct to the sea makes, together with its natural port, one of the most beautiful place of the archipelago; where the air smells in calmness and the sea kisses the mountain. Sóller limits the towns of Deià, Bunyola, Escorca and Fornalutx constituting a region marked by the purest traditional air of its people and its landscape, example of the most popular Mallorca. Its name of Arab origin comes from the toponym Sûlyâr.
This city that since formerly has been qualified for their inhabitants like "an island in Mallorca" for its ancestral isolation, hides a rich patrimony in churches, monuments, stately houses, museums and small palaces. Their narrow streets and its ancient centre move fleetingly to the visitor in several centuries behind. Sóller is, moreover, a cradle of the modernist architecture in Mallorca and the colonial air of some palatine houses that their emigrants constructed between XIX and XX centuries when they made fortune in America and France can be breathed in their streets. Sóller possesses since 1905 the title of city by order of the king Alfons XIII.
Isolated by the mountains and surrounded by nature, it´s possible to arrive from Palma to the valley crossing the known mountain pass "Coll de Sóller" with more than 60 bends, by the tunnel of toll that it´s in service from 1997 or through an unforgettable itinerary for the very beautiful passages where it goes the Railway of Sóller that in 1912 put the final to its physical isolation. One time in the station the visitor can rise by tram the five kilometers between the centre of Sóller and its port.
Sóller is the favorite place for the visitors to contemplate the nature, to practice hiking, to enjoy the calmness that offer their streets and to swimm in its small bay. The tourists that year by year come to the valley give good faith of this.
